Salt Exposure and the Preparation It Requires

On Sanibel we do not spot-paint. Oxidation is removed mechanically across the entire frame, corrosion at every fastener and cable anchor is neutralized and sealed, and all hardware is replaced with stainless steel before primer. This is more labor than an inland restoration and it is the reason the finish lasts. After the project we recommend a fresh-water rinse of the frame following windy weather; it is the single most effective maintenance step on the island.

Correcting Post-Ian Repairs

Many island cages were closed with whatever was available in the months after the storm. We routinely find mismatched screws already rusting, bars that were bent and stretched back into place, and screen tensioned onto damaged channels. Restoration undoes those shortcuts: bent members are corrected or replaced where the frame allows, hardware is standardized, and the surface is prepared properly before coating.

What the Project Includes

Inspection

Every beam, upright, gutter seam, cable and anchor is checked and photographed, with particular attention to connections at elevated decks and to any repairs made after the storm.

Hardware and structural corrections

Stainless fasteners throughout, new cable braces where the old ones have corroded, and replacement of cracked brackets.

Coating

Adhesion primer and an exterior aluminum coating sprayed with the pool, deck, elevated structure, house and vegetation protected. White and bronze are the usual island choices; some homeowners move to black for a modern look.

Screen

Aged or damaged panels rescreened after cure. No-see-um mesh on the walls is nearly standard on Sanibel because of the midges from the bay and the refuge.

Island Logistics

We plan around causeway traffic, limited parking on the narrower streets and the wind. Elevated homes may need lifts or scaffolding for the cage, which is arranged before the first day. Most single-family restorations take three to five working days on the island, with a buffer for weather.

Will a restored finish hold up on the Gulf side?

With full preparation, stainless hardware and an aluminum-specific coating, yes, though coastal finishes have a shorter life than inland ones. Regular fresh-water rinsing extends it considerably.

My cage was repaired after Ian. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily. We assess the earlier work, correct what was done in a hurry and proceed with the full restoration.

Can you work on an elevated home?

Yes. Lifts or scaffolding are arranged as needed for cages attached to raised structures.
