Cape Coral is famous for its canals, and most residents know whether theirs is Gulf-access or freshwater. Fewer know how much that single fact changes the life of the pool cage on the lanai. Here is what the two environments do to aluminum, and what it means when the cage needs work.
Gulf-Access Canals: Salt Every Day
On the saltwater canals of the southeast and southwest Cape, salt rides the breeze onto every surface of the frame. The first signs are white corrosion blooms at fastener heads, rust streaks from the screws and cables, and pitting along the bottom rail where salt meets irrigation water. The finish chalks faster too, because salt accelerates oxidation. Preparation for these cages is a coastal job: complete mechanical oxidation removal, corrosion neutralized and sealed at every penetration, and every screw replaced with stainless steel before any coating.
Freshwater Canals and the Northern Cape
Freshwater canal lots and the open lots up north do not fight salt, but they fight sun and iron. Full sun on open ground chalks the finish on the south and west beams, and well-fed irrigation leaves orange iron staining on the lower frame and screen. Iron deposits etch into aluminum and must be stripped, not painted over, and the sprinkler heads hitting the cage should be redirected before a new finish goes on.

Hurricane Ian hit both kinds of canal lots. Many enclosures were closed quickly afterward with mismatched hardware and screen stretched over bent bars, and some were painted over that work. Restoration projects in the Cape routinely start by undoing those shortcuts before the frame is prepared and coated.
Maintenance by Canal Type
- Saltwater: rinse the frame with fresh water after windy weather; it is the single most effective habit.
- Freshwater and inland: adjust sprinklers away from the cage and consider a filter on the well system.
- Both: keep roof channels clear and trim back anything touching the frame.
