“Pool enclosure” and “pool cage” usually mean the same structure, but the family of aluminum screen enclosures on Florida homes is wider than that: screened lanais without a pool, birdcage patios, screened porches and entryways, and the super-gutter structures that tie them to the house. They are all painted the same way, and they all fail the same way when they are painted badly.
The Same Aluminum, the Same Rules
Whether the enclosure covers a pool or a patio table, the frame is extruded aluminum with a factory finish that chalks in the sun and zinc fasteners that rust in the humidity. Painting it properly means dissolving the chalk, removing the oxidized layer mechanically, treating rust at every fastener, replacing corroded screws with stainless steel, priming with an adhesion primer and spraying an exterior coating formulated for aluminum.
Lanais and Birdcages
Screened lanais and birdcage patios are often smaller than pool cages and closer to the house, which means more masking of stucco, windows and doors and less roof work. They are frequently painted at the same time as the pool cage so the two structures match, and they are a common project in villa and 55-plus communities where the enclosure is part of the home’s approved exterior.
Screened Porches and Entryways
Front-entry screen enclosures take the most public view and the most sun on the west side of the house. They are quick projects on their own and are usually added to a pool cage repaint as a separate line.
Color and Community Standards
White remains the traditional finish on older homes; bronze and black are standard in newer communities. Enclosure color often must match the pool cage and the community reference, and same-color repainting is generally treated as maintenance while a color change needs product information for the architectural committee.
